F.Y.I. - "Clap Clap"

What do you get when you take an uptempo party song that lyrically warns of all the dangers involved in the party scene? You get F.Y.I.'s "Clap Clap." While this may sound counterproductive, it actually makes for intriguing work.

F.Y.I. is super nice with the pen. Really showcasing the poetry involved in writing raps, he puts together 3 verses that really play well over the driving "four to the floor" Afro-Cuban rhythm. He touches on street violence, sex and drugs and cleverly works them into a rapid fire delivery. It's so stylized that it's easy to miss the lyrics just listening to the flow. When you do tune in though, the content is strong.

F.Y.I. - "Incense"

I hear a LOT of rappers and one of rappers' favorite thing to say is, "I'm working." What that usually translates to is, "I spend a lot of time in my friend's bedroom studio creepin' on a come up." It's terribly cliche and repetitive but that's what rappin' ass rappers do, so whatever.

Then there are rappers like F.Y.I. He is working. From performing at some of the country's biggest indie music festivals like A3C and CMJ to landing a spot on a reality TV show to being named a Top 25 Artist to Watch on URB Magazine; F.Y.I. is doing real work.

The newest showcase in his storied history is the single, "Incense" produced by LA based hitmaker Shlohmo. It's a cloudy tale of a lascivious late night told in a cryptic style that really sets F.Y.I. apart as an artist. There is a behind the scenes clip available from the video shoot and I can't wait to see it.

Now I need to find my damn incense. "We burning incense slooooowwwww...." 

L.A. - "Spittin' Out Blood" Music Video

L.A. is the name. No Hollywood. If you've been following this blog for a while, you probably remember my interview with her from earlier this year. If you're new to L.A.'s music, I suggest you put a helmet on before you play this video. This is riot music. No disrespect to the serious events happening in London. Just a nod to the title of L.A.'s first wholly original solo project titled "L.A. Riots". The album is scheduled to release September 14th and this is the first video to be released.

L.A. is, of course, in top form and production by west coast duo Hippie Sabotage only adds to the savage nature of the track. This girl is ferocious on the mic. Unlike anything we've seen in Hip-Hop in many many years; if ever. Check out this great video and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Happy new year to all of the wonderful individuals that support this blog! 2010 was only the beginning of this adventure and there's no better way to kick off 2011 than with a super dope interview.

Sit back and enjoy this trip into the mind of LA. This young lady is making strides in leaps and bounds and is sure to be a huge success story in 2011. There are great talents and there are once in a lifetime talents. LA is looking like the once in a lifetime variety. Her incredible energy coupled with a genuine gift with words equals one of the most exciting MCs, male or female, signed or unsigned on the market today.

 

LA at Crash Mansion

A short while ago I had the opportunity to check out the 3rd installment of Legend Factory Live. This event is by far one of the best industry showcases I have ever had the pleasure of attending.  Each of the two shows I attended were absolutely brimming with talent from all genres of music. It's is genuinely a total experience.

One particular artist stood out to me at the last show and rather than gush over her talent and energy, I'll let you just experience it the way I did. Check out LA's indie video recently posted from her Twitter page.  This is Hip-Hop!
