Fjer - 'A New Start' EP

Meet Danish born singer Fjer. The singer, songwriter and producer recently relocated to New York, signed a deal with new imprint Quintic and released this 6 song EP, 'A New Start.' If you're one of those "this is my year" bots, you're already behind schedule. Fjer is puttin' in WORK.

The soul infused vocals of Fjer over bass heavy electro beats is like Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey. Very easy to digest but the content is no joke. From the opening note of "Long Nights" (my favorite track) she draws you in. She then has her way with your sensibilities and then finally drops you off in deep space on "Against the World." It's really dope music with great range.

The intro has a Bjork like feel and the title track "A New Start" is very Imogen Heap in approach but overall Fjer has solidly established herself as an individual. I'm looking forward to hearing a full on project and hearing how she marries her Danish roots to her new life here in America.

Leikeli47 - "$$$ Ina-Bind" Music Video

What the hell is this? Who? How? When? I don't even know where to begin with this one!

Meet Leikeli47. Yes, that is her name.... I don't know what to tell you. It's pronounced leh-kay-lee. That's all I know.

This one came through via the stylish fellows over at Stuff Fly People Like. I am completely mesmerized by everything I saw and intrigued by everything I did not see. This girl is OUTTA HERE! She is dopeness on a stick... in a mask. You haven't seen or heard anything like this since Missy Elliott was at the peak of her career and Leikeli47 is going to establish a whole new movement in Hip-Hop culture. That "it" factor that people always talk about? Yeah.

I seriously don't know what to say. I'll only end up gushing superlatives so just watch this joint IMMEDIATELY

Kokayi - 'Pro Deo et Patria'

When Kokayi released 'Robots & Dinosaurs' in 2010, I was blown away by the singular nature of everything he was doing lyrically and musically. The blend of sounds, rhythms and storytelling were unlike anything I had heard before. 2 years later, he's back with 'Pro Deo et Patria' and everything that R&D was has been re imagined and amplified in magnificent order.

One of the most standout elements of Kokayi's work is his production. For this album, he shows up, out and off with the depth of his work and scope of the project. This is album is far more "electric" than the last in terms of sonics and completely abandons all regard for normalcy. Not the faux House-Dance Mix-Dubstep stuff taking over urban radio. That's not what it is at all. It's more genre redefining than anything; in the way that Janelle Monae's 'Archandroid' was. He's completely set his own rules and lane.

I'm amazed at the level of artistry Kokayi delivers. From the first 8 bars of the album to the last he displays pure genius ability. When I heard the instrumentation choices on the opening to the album, "Birdus Ghetti", my jaw hit the floor. This dude is fearless! "ZaZa Hey" and "Punchdrunk" are not of this universe and everything in between is perfectly complimentary. You will be blown away by 'Pro Deo et Patria.' I can promise you this.

Muhsinah - "Emergency" Acoustic Live

DC songstress Muhsinah is a real diamond in the rough. What she is able to hear and articulate musically shines even brighter than Moissanite though. She's incredibly gifted.

In this live footage from a recent show at Black Cat in Washington, D.C. Muhsinah gives us a brand new song she, of course, wrote and produced herself. This incredibly special performance gives me goosebumps every time I hear it! This was an encore performance at the last show of her first tour. The never before performed "Emergency" will be featured on her upcoming 'Gone: Deluxe' album shipping July 10th to fans who pre-ordered the album through her Kickstarter campaign.

Lianne La Havas - "Forget" Music Video

The lead single from Lianne La Havas' forthcoming EP of the same name just dropped and holy hell is it amazing! You will not soon "Forget" this lovely artist or this incredible song.

With a cool and soft 60's Art Deco feel set to a futuristic, afronaut, semi-aquatic production absolutely LACED by Lianne's seductive vocal performance, this cut is 100% win. 'Forget' is available for purchase right now on iTunes for peanuts.

Muhsinah - "Stop!" Music Video

Muhsinah is a true gem. Her incredible talents as a musician are propelling her to soaring heights on the independent music scene. Her double EP 'Gone' released to critical acclaim and left fans new and old wanting for more. The DC area songstress answered the call with a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to support production of a new video, 'Gone' deluxe edition double CD pressing as well as a limited 12" vinyl pressing. She sweetened the deal for supporters by offering up her recording equipment; which included a condensor microphone, her iMac, an MPC 500 and a Kalimba. Of course, she crushed her goal and her bonus goal and we will be seeing a beefed up release, lots of swag and a brand new music video soon.

As an instant gratification for supporters she released this video for "Stop!" It's an incredibly ambitious video shot in stop motion format. The photographs used to compose this video number just under 20,000! Whoa. Kudos to Muhsinah and director Jelani Memory for giving us such a beautiful creative gift. Rubee Rayne - "Not Alone" (Single Remix)

 

 The UK has been bubblin' heavy for over a decade now and their music scene has been at the forefront of Great Britain's new appeal. This young artist is next in the vein of triple threat females that pumped M.I.A. and Santigold. On this remix to the slightly dated "Single", Double R puts her own twist on the syrupy Omen and 40 produced track.

This girl is right up my musical alley and I can't wait to hear more from her. Which reminds me that I really need to go visit London. That's another discussion though. Click. Listen. Enjoy.

Beyond This Point - "Mama Said"

I'm always pleasantly surprised by BTP releases. With "Mama Said" the band takes listeners into the vein of Gorillaz, Tricky and even Terence Trent D'Arby with this soupy sound set. Lead singer Switch's lyrics move perfectly over the drum and bass as the eerie Kill Bill-ish whistle pulls everything into focus.

Beyond This Point is a band that continually stretches it's boundaries. This track is unlike anything I've heard from them before but at the same time it's exactly where I'd expect them to be. Evolving. The coda on this song is absolutely phenomenal and really showcases how the band composes complete thoughts and not just 4 to 8 bar loops and simple melodies. It's really fine work that any true music fan will appreciate.

"Mama Said" is the first of what is reported to be a series of weekly releases on the band's new blog Insanity's A Gift. While there have been countless weekly releases from major and indie artists, this set I will be looking forward to more than any other!

Pardon My Fresh presents "The Day After"

This EP release from Pardon My Fresh Music Group is a post Valentine's day ode to jilted lovers everywhere. With titles like "Stupid Cupid" and "Cupid Must Die", you'd think this is a soundtrack to the Haters' Ball. It's not that at all though. 'The Day After' is a collection of stories about love in all of it's raw and unpleasant moments as well as the flighty and fanciful ones. 

The bulk of the production is handled by in-house producer and Beyond This Point band member Mylon. The disc really showcases how capable a musician he is. Standout tracks for me are "Untitled", "Ex's and Oh's" and "8-Bit Luv". AO gives some great production as well on the 2 tracks he delivers. The two offer up a cohesive funk/soul/alternative gumbo that is a ton of fun to listen to.

If you've ever dealt with the side effects of true love, you'll greatly enjoy the stories and music contained in this project. German DJ Flula Borg handles interlude duty and trust me, they are hilarious. Only Flula could/would threaten to put grape jelly in Cupid's pants or shove one of Cupid's own arrows up his own ass.
